INSTANT DEATH

Reviews

A small but interesting review from the Boston Phoenix.

In their previous incarnation, the Moistboyz were an excuse for Mickey Moist — better known by his other rock alias, Dean Ween — to replace Ween’s inoffensively goofy shtick with a humorlessly offensive shtick that had already been done unfunnier, and more offensively, by Anal Cunt, not to mention Insane Clown Posse. In the wake of two pseudo-rap-metal discs for the Beastie Boys’ defunct Grand Royal label, the duo have rebounded with what Ween fans can only hope is a satirical white-trash sleaze-metal album titled III for Mike Patton’s Ipecac label. They’re on tour with Ween bassist Dave Dreiwitz’s retarded hardcore band Instant Death; on that duo’s recent New Evil Vibe, the songs veer between amusing 30-second outbursts and excruciating Sabbath jams. The Moistboyz and Instant Death are at Higher Ground (802-654-888 in Winooski, Vermont, on Friday and at T.T. the Bear’s Place (617-492-BEAR) in Cambridge on Saturday

Seven Days, Burlington Vermont
by Ethan Covey

In the mood for sloppy, searing, dumb-ass rock about screwing and getting wasted? Instnat Death, the pet project of Ween bassist Dave Dreiwitz and drummer Scott Byrne, specialize in fuzzy pop-punk for the glue sniffing crowd. New Evil Vibe is a collection of 28 stoner-pop nuggets, from the crack-smoking epic "Big Black Buick" to the suicide love song "Sweet Relief". The Ween similarities are many, as both Instant Death's subject matter and knack for a great hook mirror that of the New Jersey tricksters. Tune after tune features sing along melodies and slapstick lyrics, and they're...great. Sure, the idea isn't exactly new, and you won't be seeing Instant Death on the Grammy platform anytime soon, but they do manage to make delightfully stupid pop without being annoying. A difficult task indeed.

Evil Vibrato - Instantaneous Muerto - A review by Adam Bernstein

What happens when you combine the best of Grand Funk Railroad, Sweet, a rhythm section lead Led Zeppelin, the atonal styling of Stockhausen, Don Cherry, the Beach Boys, Thin Lizzy and the best of East Coast punk?

What happens when you cross the post-modern musings of Sylvia Plath, Edgar Allen Poe, William Burroughs, Nieztche and Suzie Bright? What becomes of those who attend the secret gathering of Buddha, Jesus, Moses and Mohammed?

A spiritual smorgasbord? A hankering for suicide? A desire for Mom's old fashioned cooking?

No. Instant Death. Yeah. The best kind.

New Evil Vibe is the debut release from Instant Death, the rhythm section duo of Scott Byrne and Dave Dreiwitz. Instant Death get to the core of rock 'n roll by bypassing the now commonplace guitar. They rely on the inherent but often ignored melodic capacity of electric bass and drums. While they often augment their sound with electronics, they never obscure their essence- a catchy chorus, gut wrenching distorted bass, and in the face drum sound.

The Buddha wrote and I paraphrase " No Birth, No DeathŠ." Why not enjoy it this instant!? Instant Death! Get it?!
